Hofburg Vienna

The earliest extant record of the Hofburg is dated 1279, which was during the reign of King Rudolf I of Habsburg, but construction work began during the Babenberg period in the first half of the 13th century. Under King Ottokar II of Bohemia, the castle was built. This structure was far from being a fine residence; with its towers and moat, it was part of the city’s fortifications. The transformation into a palace started in the mid-16th century when Ferdinand I moved his court to Vienna.

A number of wings were extended and new structures were added. This is a pattern that has continued down to the present, and a tour of the Hofburg is always a journey into the history of art and architecture – with buildings from many periods: Medieval Gothic, the Renaissance, and 17th and 18th century Baroque, as well as wings in Historicism style from the 19th century, right up to the modern period with the interior modifications made in the 20th and 21st centuries.
